The ASK (Assessing Suicide in Kids) Workshop | Online

Event description

This online workshop is for professionals working with children and young people aged 5-14 years old. The ASK Workshop is completed across two days plus reading completed prior to the live workshop.

The ASK Workshop online challenges commonly held notions about children’s capacity to consider suicide.

In 2022, suicide was the second leading cause of child death in Australian children aged 5 -17 years.

Participants learn:

  • How to talk about death with children
  • How to talk about suicide with children
  • Developmentally appropriate strategies and tools to identify young children at risk of suicide
  • How to quickly gather and organise details needed to assess risk
  • How to explore and consider protective factors to inform safety planning
  • To consider common challenges when working with parents and possible solutions

Important Course Information:

  • Pre-Workshop reading is required to be completed prior to the workshop to be permitted access to the live stream
  • Your live stream link and pre-reading will be emailed to you in the days prior to the training
  • The live stream will go from 8:30am to approximately 1:30pm both days 

Course Structure

Participants learn using case studies, guided simulations, discussion and practice using an assessment tool.

Following the course

Participants will have an increased understanding and alertness to the fact that children can be at risk of suicide. They will know what risk factors to look out for and feel confident approaching the subject of death and suicide with a child. Participants receive a risk assessment tool, a quick reference tool and a certificate.

Course length: 9 hours – delivered across two live streams over two consecutive days (4.5 hours per day) plus 1-2 hours of self-paced pre-workshop reading
