Alcohol, Drugs & Gambling

Worried about addiction?

Addictions can have a damaging impact on individuals, families and communities. It is important to get support if you or someone you know needs help to manage an addiction.

Understanding substance use and withdrawal

People use substances for various reasons—like to relax, have fun, or escape problems. However, relying on substances can lead to dependence, with serious long-term effects on health.

Withdrawal occurs when cutting back or stopping, with symptoms like irritability, fatigue, cravings, and sleep issues. The experience varies based on the substance and usage. Stopping suddenly can be dangerous, so it’s important to consult a health professional for guidance.

If someone you know is struggling with substance use, reach out for help. Support is available in the community, online, or by phone—24/7.

Worried About Gambling

Gambling is widespread in Australia, with 70% of Australians engaging in some form of it annually, from pokies and lotto to card games and betting on races. However, for some individuals, gambling can spiral into a serious problem.

Problem gambling doesn’t always involve being out of control. It is defined as any gambling behavior that negatively impacts your life or the lives of those around you. The effects of problem gambling can extend into various areas, such as:

  • Financial issues: Mounting debt or financial strain
  • Relationship struggles: Strain on personal and family relationships
  • Employment difficulties: Job loss or performance issues at work
  • Mental health: Emotional distress, anxiety, or depression
  • Family impact: Harmful effects on children and loved ones
  • Addiction: Loss of control and dependence on gambling

If you or someone you know is experiencing the negative effects of gambling, support is available. See below a range of local helplines, online support groups, or counselling services.
